Are Physophysical tests useful in CI fitting?

A recent global survey has shown that the current state of the art in CI fitting can be resumed as setting the min and max levels based on comfort (Vaerenberg B, et al.  Sci World J  2014; Article ID 501738: 1-12).  Psychophysical measures are often obtained but they are hardly used to drive the MAP changes in a systematic way.  This results in huge inter-center variability in all aspects of CI fitting, and most surprisingly also in the MAP a CI recipient gets.

The author will raise the question how to interpret this huge variability.  He will question how psychophysical test results are interpreted, whether they merely document the patient’s progress or serve the fitting process, or are just a waste of time.  He will address the scope of CI fitting and whether there are measurable targets. Finally he will discuss the possibility or need for process optimization and setting standards for GCP (good clinical practice).
